Agedashi Tofu

Crispy fried tofu cubes smothered in a savory-sweet dashi sauce with bonito flakes and green onions.

Ingredients

  • 14 oz firm tofu
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • 2 cups vegetable oil for frying
  • 1 cup dashi broth
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon mirin
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon grated ginger
  • 2 tablespoons bonito flakes
  • 2 green onions, sliced
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch slurry (mixed with water)

Directions

  1. 1Drain tofu and cut into 8 equal cubes. Pat dry with paper towels.
  2. 2Heat oil in a deep pan to 350°F. Coat tofu cubes evenly with cornstarch and fry until golden on all sides, about 4-5 minutes. Drain on paper towels.
  3. 3In a small saucepan, combine dashi, soy sauce, mirin, sugar, garlic, and ginger. Bring to a simmer.
  4. 4Stir in cornstarch slurry to thicken the sauce slightly, about 1 minute.
  5. 5Place fried tofu cubes in a serving dish and pour hot sauce over them.
  6. 6Top with bonito flakes and green onions. Serve immediately while the tofu is still warm.
