All-Purpose Barbecue Dry Rub

A smoky-sweet spice blend to rub onto pork ribs, pork shoulder, or chicken before grilling or smoking; mix once and store in a jar for months.

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup smoked paprika
  • 3 tablespoons packed light brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons kosher salt
  • 1 tablespoon coarse black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper

Directions

  1. 1Measure all ingredients into a medium bowl.
  2. 2Whisk or stir thoroughly until the brown sugar is fully broken up and the mixture is uniform in color with no clumps.
  3. 3Press any remaining sugar lumps against the side of the bowl with the back of a spoon and stir again.
  4. 4Transfer the rub to a clean, dry glass jar with a tight-fitting lid and seal it.
  5. 5Label the jar with the date; store at room temperature away from heat and light for up to 6 months.

💡 Use about 1 tablespoon of rub per pound of meat, patting it on firmly at least 15 minutes before cooking for best adhesion.
