Ingredients

  • 2 cups pre-cooked cornmeal flour (arepa flour)
  • 1 3/4 cups warm water
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 2 cups vegetable oil for frying

Directions

  1. 1Mix cornmeal flour, warm water, and salt in a bowl until a soft dough forms, similar to mashed potatoes.
  2. 2Let the dough rest for 5 minutes to hydrate fully.
  3. 3Wet your hands and form the dough into 8 oval patties about 3 inches long and 1/2 inch thick.
  4. 4Heat oil in a deep skillet over medium-high heat until shimmering.
  5. 5Fry arepas for 4-5 minutes per side until golden brown and a light crust forms.
  6. 6Drain on paper towels and serve warm with butter, cheese, or your desired filling.
