Baked Mac and Cheese

Ingredients
- •1 pound elbow macaroni
- •4 tablespoons butter
- •1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- •3 cups whole milk
- •2 cups sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
- •1 cup gruyere cheese, shredded
- •1/2 cup parmesan cheese, grated
- •1 teaspoon salt
- •1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- •1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- •1 cup panko breadcrumbs
- •2 tablespoons melted butter
Directions
- 1Preheat oven to 350°F. Cook macaroni according to package directions, drain, and set aside.
- 2Melt 4 tablespoons butter in a large saucepan, whisk in flour to create a roux, and cook for 1 minute while stirring constantly.
- 3Gradually add milk while whisking to avoid lumps, then cook until the sauce thickens, about 5 minutes.
- 4Remove from heat and stir in cheddar, gruyere, and parmesan cheeses until melted and smooth. Season with salt, pepper, and cayenne.
- 5Combine the cheese sauce with cooked macaroni and transfer to a greased 9x13 inch baking dish.
- 6Mix panko breadcrumbs with 2 tablespoons melted butter, then sprinkle over the top of the mac and cheese.
- 7Bake for 20-25 minutes until the top is golden brown and the sauce is bubbly around the edges.
