Bisi Bele Bath

A vibrant, aromatic one-pot rice and lentil dish loaded with vegetables, spices, and peanuts from South India.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup basmati rice
  • 1/2 cup toor dal (split pigeon peas)
  • 2 tablespoons roasted peanuts
  • 1 cup mixed vegetables (carrots, green beans, peas, potato)
  • 2 tablespoons ghee
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 2 dried red chilies
  • 1 tablespoon bisi bele bath spice powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • salt to taste salt
  • 3.5 cups water

Directions

  1. 1Rinse rice and toor dal separately under cold water and set aside.
  2. 2Heat ghee in a pot and add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, and dried red chilies; let them splutter for 30 seconds.
  3. 3Add the mixed vegetables and peanuts, sauté for 2-3 minutes until fragrant.
  4. 4Add the rinsed rice and dal to the pot, stir well to combine with the ghee and spices.
  5. 5Add turmeric powder, bisi bele bath spice powder, salt, and 3.5 cups of water; bring to a boil.
  6. 6Reduce heat to low, cover with a lid, and simmer for 20-25 minutes until rice and dal are fully cooked and water is absorbed.
  7. 7Fluff with a fork and serve hot with pickle or yogurt on the side.
