Brezel with Sausage

Ingredients

  • 2 fresh soft pretzels or brezels
  • 2 bratwurst or knockwurst sausages
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons whole grain mustard
  • 1/4 cup sauerkraut
  • 2 slices Swiss or cheddar cheese (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • to taste Salt and pepper

Directions

  1. 1Heat oil in a skillet over medium-high heat and cook the sausages for 12-15 minutes, turning occasionally, until browned and cooked through.
  2. 2Warm the pretzels by wrapping in foil and heating in a 350°F oven for 5 minutes, or slice and toast them lightly.
  3. 3Slice the cooked sausages in half lengthwise or leave whole, depending on preference.
  4. 4Slice the warm pretzels horizontally and butter the insides.
  5. 5Spread mustard on the pretzel bottoms, add the sausage, top with sauerkraut and cheese if desired.
  6. 6Close the pretzel and serve immediately with additional mustard on the side.
