Chicken Fried Steak

Ingredients

  • 1.5 lbs beef cube steak or round steak
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 0.5 tsp black pepper
  • 0.5 tsp garlic powder
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tbsp milk
  • 2 cups vegetable oil for frying
  • 3 tbsp butter
  • 3 tbsp flour
  • 2 cups whole milk

Directions

  1. 1Mix 1 cup flour with salt, pepper, and garlic powder in a shallow dish. Whisk eggs with 2 tbsp milk in another dish.
  2. 2Dredge each steak in the flour mixture, shake off excess, dip in egg mixture, then coat again in flour.
  3. 3Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Fry steaks 3-4 minutes per side until golden brown and crispy. Transfer to a plate.
  4. 4Pour off most oil from the skillet, leaving about 2 tbsp. Add butter and melt over medium heat.
  5. 5Whisk in 3 tbsp flour to create a roux, stirring constantly for 1 minute until lightly browned.
  6. 6Slowly pour in 2 cups milk while whisking constantly until the gravy thickens, about 3-4 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  7. 7Arrange steaks on a serving platter and pour the hot country gravy over top. Serve immediately.
