Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 6 tablespoons cold butter, cubed
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons milk for egg wash

Directions

  1. 1Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt in a large bowl.
  2. 2Cut cold butter into the flour mixture using a pastry cutter or your fingertips until it resembles breadcrumbs.
  3. 3In a small bowl, whisk together milk, egg, and vanilla extract. Pour into the dry mixture and stir until just combined into a soft dough.
  4. 4Turn dough onto a floured surface and gently knead 2-3 times. Pat into a 3/4-inch thick disk.
  5. 5Cut into 8 wedges using a sharp knife, or cut into rounds with a biscuit cutter. Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  6. 6Brush tops with milk for egg wash. Bake for 12-15 minutes until golden brown.
  7. 7Cool on a wire rack for 5 minutes before serving warm with clotted cream and jam.
