Classic Hot Chocolate

Classic Hot Chocolate

Thick, velvety hot chocolate made from real cocoa and a touch of melted chocolate — not a powder packet — so it tastes deeply rich and impossibly comforting. The kind you'll make on a snowy Canadian night and never want to stop drinking.

⏱ 10 minServes 2American

Ingredients

  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/3 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips or chopped chocolate
  • 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 pinch pinch of salt
  • as desired whipped cream or mini marshmallows, for serving

Directions

  1. 1Whisk together cocoa powder, sugar, and salt in a small saucepan until combined.
  2. 2Add about 1/4 cup of the milk and whisk into a smooth paste with no lumps.
  3. 3Pour in the remaining milk and heat over medium heat, stirring frequently.
  4. 4When the milk is steaming and just about to simmer, add the chocolate chips.
  5. 5Whisk constantly for 2 minutes until the chocolate is fully melted and the mixture is smooth and glossy.
  6. 6Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract.
  7. 7Pour into two mugs and top with whipped cream or marshmallows.

💡 Using a combination of cocoa powder and real chocolate gives you the best of both worlds — deep chocolate flavour from the cocoa and richness from the melted chocolate. For an adult version, add a splash of Baileys or Kahlúa. For a dairy-free version, oat milk or full-fat coconut milk gives the creamiest result.
