Ingredients
- •1 cup (240 g) tomato paste
- •1 cup (240 ml) water
- •1/3 cup (80 ml) apple cider vinegar
- •1/4 cup (55 g) packed dark brown sugar
- •2 tablespoons molasses
- •1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- •1 teaspoon smoked paprika
- •1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- •1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- •1/2 teaspoon fine salt
- •1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
Directions
- 1Combine the tomato paste and water in a medium heavy-bottomed saucepan and whisk until smooth.
- 2Add the apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, molasses, and Worcestershire sauce, whisking to combine.
- 3Stir in the smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and cayenne pepper.
- 4Set the pan over medium heat and bring the sauce to a gentle simmer, stirring frequently.
- 5Reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer uncovered for 25 to 30 minutes, stirring every few minutes, until the sauce thickens enough to coat the back of a spoon.
- 6Remove from heat and taste; adjust salt, vinegar, or brown sugar as needed to balance sweet, tangy, and smoky notes.
- 7Let the sauce cool to room temperature before transferring to a sealed jar or container; refrigerate for up to 3 weeks.
💡 For a smoother, glossier sauce, blend it briefly with an immersion blender before cooling.
