Five-Spice Braised Pork

Tender pork belly infused with warm spices, soy sauce, and aromatics in a rich, glossy braise.

⏱ 120 minServes 4Chinese

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs pork belly, cut into 2-inch cubes
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon dark soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 tablespoon five-spice powder
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon ginger, minced
  • 2 star anise
  • 1 stick cinnamon
  • 1 cup chicken broth
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 3 scallions, cut into 2-inch pieces

Directions

  1. 1Heat oil in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Brown the pork cubes on all sides, about 8 minutes total, then remove and set aside.
  2. 2In the same pot, sauté garlic and ginger for 30 seconds until fragrant. Stir in five-spice powder and cook for 15 seconds.
  3. 3Add soy sauce, dark soy sauce, sugar, and chicken broth. Stir well, then add the browned pork back to the pot along with star anise and cinnamon stick.
  4. 4Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low. Cover and simmer for 90 minutes, stirring occasionally, until pork is very tender.
  5. 5Remove the lid and increase heat to medium. Simmer uncovered for 10-15 minutes to reduce the sauce until glossy and slightly thickened.
  6. 6Remove star anise and cinnamon stick. Stir in scallions and cook for 1 minute. Serve hot over steamed rice.
