Grilled Portobello Mushroom Steaks

Meaty, marinated portobello mushrooms grilled until tender and topped with melted cheese and fresh herbs.

Ingredients

  • 4 large portobello mushroom caps
  • 3 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon dried Italian seasoning
  • 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 2 tablespoons fresh basil, chopped
  • to taste salt and black pepper

Directions

  1. 1Remove stems from mushroom caps and gently scrape out dark gills with a spoon; brush caps lightly with oil.
  2. 2Whisk together balsamic vinegar, olive oil, minced garlic, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper in a small bowl.
  3. 3Place mushroom caps in a shallow dish and brush both sides with the marinade; let sit for 10 minutes.
  4. 4Heat grill or grill pan to medium-high heat and grill mushroom caps gill-side up for 4-5 minutes.
  5. 5Flip caps, top with mozzarella cheese, and grill for another 4-5 minutes until cheese melts and mushrooms are tender.
  6. 6Transfer to plates, garnish with fresh basil, and serve immediately.
