⏱ 5 minServes 1Japanese
Ingredients
- •1 tsp matcha powder (culinary or ceremonial grade)
- •3 tbsp hot water (not boiling, about 75°C / 170°F)
- •3/4 cup oat milk or whole milk
- •1–2 tsp simple syrup, honey, or maple syrup (to taste)
- •1 cup ice cubes
Directions
- 1Sift the matcha powder into a small bowl or mug to remove any lumps.
- 2Add the hot (not boiling) water and whisk vigorously in a zigzag motion for about 30 seconds until completely smooth and slightly frothy — a small matcha whisk (chasen) is ideal but a regular small whisk works fine.
- 3Stir in the sweetener of your choice into the matcha mixture.
- 4Fill a tall glass to the top with ice cubes.
- 5Pour the cold milk over the ice.
- 6Slowly pour the matcha mixture over the milk and ice.
- 7Stir gently and serve immediately, or leave it layered for the stunning visual effect.
💡 Boiling water will make matcha taste bitter and grassy — let your kettle sit for 2 minutes off the boil, or target 75°C. Matcha powder is now widely available at Bulk Barn, T&T Supermarket, and most major Canadian grocery stores in the tea or health aisle. For a lightly sweetened drink, oat milk adds a natural sweetness that pairs beautifully with matcha. Culinary grade is more affordable and perfectly good for lattes.
