Ingredients

  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 2 tablespoons butter, softened
  • 1.5 cups buttermilk

Directions

  1. 1Preheat oven to 400°F and lightly grease a baking sheet.
  2. 2Mix whole wheat flour, all-purpose flour, salt, baking soda, and sugar in a large bowl.
  3. 3Add softened butter and rub into the flour mixture with your fingertips until breadcrumb texture forms.
  4. 4Pour in buttermilk and stir gently with a wooden spoon until a soft dough forms, being careful not to overwork it.
  5. 5Turn dough onto a floured surface and shape into a round loaf about 1.5 inches thick.
  6. 6Place on baking sheet and cut a shallow cross on top with a knife.
  7. 7Bake for 30-35 minutes until golden brown and the loaf sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
