Loukoumades

Golden, fluffy Greek honey puffs that are crispy on the outside and soft inside, drizzled with warm honey and sprinkled with cinnamon.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons instant yeast
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • vegetable oil for frying
  • 3/4 cup honey
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup chopped walnuts

Directions

  1. 1Mix flour and salt in a large bowl. In another bowl, dissolve yeast and sugar in warm water, then let sit 5 minutes until foamy.
  2. 2Pour yeast mixture into flour, add olive oil, and mix until a thick, sticky batter forms. Cover and let rise for 20 minutes.
  3. 3Heat vegetable oil in a deep pot to 350°F (175°C).
  4. 4Using two wet spoons, drop rounded spoonfuls of batter into hot oil, frying 2-3 loukoumades at a time for about 2-3 minutes until golden brown.
  5. 5Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
  6. 6While still warm, drizzle each loukoumade generously with honey and sprinkle with cinnamon and chopped walnuts.
  7. 7Serve immediately while warm and crispy.
