Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup vegetable shortening
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 egg large egg
  • 1/4 cup molasses
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar for rolling

Directions

  1. 1Preheat oven to 350°F. In a large bowl, cream together shortening and 1 cup sugar until light and fluffy, about 2 minutes.
  2. 2Beat in egg and molasses until well combined.
  3. 3In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, and salt. Gradually add dry ingredients to wet ingredients and mix until just combined.
  4. 4Roll dough into 1-inch balls and coat with sugar for rolling.
  5. 5Place cookies 2 inches apart on a greased baking sheet.
  6. 6Bake for 10-12 minutes until edges are set but centers are still soft.
  7. 7Cool on baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
