⏱ 75 minServes 8Greek

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef or lamb
  • 1 pound penne or rigatoni pasta
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (14.5 oz) crushed tomatoes
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • to taste salt and pepper

Directions

  1. 1Preheat oven to 350°F. Cook pasta according to package directions, drain, and set aside.
  2. 2Heat olive oil in a large pan, sauté onion and garlic until softened, then add ground meat and cook until browned, breaking it apart.
  3. 3Stir in crushed tomatoes, oregano, salt, and pepper; simmer for 15 minutes until sauce thickens.
  4. 4Make béchamel sauce: melt butter, whisk in flour to form a paste, gradually add milk while stirring until smooth and thick (about 5 minutes).
  5. 5Stir half the Parmesan cheese into the béchamel sauce.
  6. 6In a 9x13 inch baking dish, layer half the pasta, then all the meat sauce, then remaining pasta.
  7. 7Pour béchamel sauce over the top layer and spread evenly, then sprinkle with remaining Parmesan cheese.
  8. 8Bake for 35-40 minutes until golden brown and bubbly. Let rest 10 minutes before serving.
