Ingredients

  • 4-5 lbs pork shoulder (butt)
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon paprika
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 cup barbecue sauce
  • 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 8 sandwich buns
  • 1 medium onion, sliced

Directions

  1. 1Mix brown sugar, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, and cayenne pepper to create a dry rub seasoning.
  2. 2Rub the seasoning mixture all over the pork shoulder and place it in a slow cooker with sliced onions.
  3. 3Cook on low for 8 hours until the pork is very tender and shreds easily with a fork.
  4. 4Remove the pork and shred it using two forks, discarding any large fat pieces.
  5. 5Mix the shredded pork with barbecue sauce and apple cider vinegar, then return it to the slow cooker for 30 minutes on low to absorb the flavors.
  6. 6Toast the sandwich buns lightly and fill each with pulled pork.
  7. 7Serve warm with additional barbecue sauce and coleslaw if desired.
