⏱ 480 minServes 6American

Ingredients

  • 2 cups steel-cut oats
  • 1/2 cup apple butter
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 4 cups water
  • 2 cups whole milk (or oat milk for dairy-free)
  • 3 tbsp maple syrup
  • 1.5 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 medium apple, peeled and diced (e.g. Gala or Honeycrisp)
  • 1/3 cup chopped walnuts or pecans, for topping
  • as desired extra maple syrup and a splash of cream, for serving

Directions

  1. 1Lightly spray the inside of the slow cooker with non-stick cooking spray or rub with a little butter to prevent sticking.
  2. 2Add steel-cut oats, apple butter, applesauce, water, milk, maple syrup, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, and salt to the slow cooker.
  3. 3Stir everything together well, then fold in the diced apple.
  4. 4Cover and cook on LOW for 7–8 hours (overnight works perfectly) or on HIGH for 3.5–4 hours.
  5. 5In the morning, stir the oatmeal well — it will be thick and creamy; add a splash of warm milk to loosen if desired.
  6. 6Spoon into bowls and top with chopped walnuts or pecans, a drizzle of maple syrup, and a splash of cream.

💡 Apple butter is sold in the jam and preserve aisle at most Canadian grocery stores including Sobeys and Metro; if unavailable, double the applesauce and add an extra tbsp of maple syrup plus a pinch more cinnamon. Steel-cut oats are essential here — rolled oats will turn mushy overnight. For dairy-free, oat milk or almond milk work beautifully.
