Fall-off-the-bone tender ribs slathered in smoky dry rub and finished with your favourite barbecue sauce — no grill, no fuss, just pure weekend comfort. A broiler finish gives them that irresistible caramelised crust.

Ingredients

  • 2 racks (approx. 3 lb total) racks baby back pork ribs
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 2 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1.5 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • 1.5 tsp salt
  • 0.5 tsp black pepper
  • 0.25 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 1 cup your favourite barbecue sauce

Directions

  1. 1Remove the thin membrane from the back of the ribs by lifting an edge with a knife and pulling it off with a paper towel for grip.
  2. 2Mix brown sugar, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cumin, chili powder, salt, pepper, and cayenne into a dry rub; coat ribs all over.
  3. 3Cut racks in half or thirds so they fit in the slow cooker standing upright around the edges.
  4. 4Drizzle apple cider vinegar into the bottom of the slow cooker; stand rib sections upright inside.
  5. 5Cover and cook on LOW for 6 hours or HIGH for 3.5 hours until meat is tender and pulling away from the bone.
  6. 6Preheat oven broiler to HIGH; line a baking sheet with foil.
  7. 7Carefully transfer ribs to the baking sheet, brush generously with barbecue sauce on both sides.
  8. 8Broil for 4–5 minutes until sauce is bubbly and caramelised, watching closely.
  9. 9Serve immediately with extra barbecue sauce on the side.

💡 Baby back ribs are available at any Canadian grocery store or butcher. For a smokier flavour without a smoker, add 0.5 tsp of liquid smoke (found near barbecue sauces) to the slow cooker liquid.
