Ingredients

  • 4 lb pork shoulder
  • 1½ tbsp Hawaiian sea salt
  • 1 tbsp liquid smoke

Directions

  1. 1Pierce the pork shoulder all over with the tip of a small knife.
  2. 2Rub Hawaiian sea salt over every side of the pork.
  3. 3Place the pork in the slow cooker and drizzle liquid smoke over top.
  4. 4Cover and cook on LOW for 9–10 hours, until the pork collapses under a fork.
  5. 5Transfer pork to a board, discard large pieces of fat, and shred the meat.
  6. 6Skim excess fat from the cooking juices, then toss enough juice with the pork to keep it moist.

💡 Kalua pork is intentionally simple; serve it with rice and steamed cabbage rather than adding a sweet barbecue sauce.
