Soft Pretzels

Chewy, warm pretzels with a golden-brown exterior and a sprinkle of coarse salt.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups warm water
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 10 cups water
  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tablespoons coarse pretzel salt

Directions

  1. 1Mix warm water, yeast, and sugar; let sit 5 minutes. Add flour, salt, and oil; knead until smooth. Let rise 1 hour until doubled.
  2. 2Divide dough into 8 pieces. Roll each into a 24-inch rope and twist into a pretzel shape.
  3. 3Boil 10 cups water with baking soda. Dip each pretzel in the solution for 30 seconds, then place on a greased baking sheet.
  4. 4Beat the egg and brush over each pretzel. Sprinkle with coarse salt.
  5. 5Bake at 425°F for 12-15 minutes until golden brown. Cool on a wire rack.
