A rich, buttery German Christmas bread studded with dried fruits, nuts, and a surprise marzipan center, topped with powdered sugar.

Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup warm milk
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup mixed dried fruits (raisins, candied citrus peel)
  • 1/2 cup sliced almonds
  • 4 ounces marzipan
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar

Directions

  1. 1Combine warm milk, yeast, and 1 teaspoon sugar; let sit 5 minutes until foamy.
  2. 2Mix flour, remaining sugar, and salt; add yeast mixture and softened butter, kneading until smooth dough forms (10 minutes).
  3. 3Fold dried fruits and almonds into dough; let rise in greased bowl 90 minutes until doubled.
  4. 4Roll dough into 12x8 inch rectangle, place marzipan log in center, fold dough over and seal; shape into oval loaf.
  5. 5Place on parchment paper, cover, and let rise 60 minutes until puffy.
  6. 6Bake at 375°F for 45-50 minutes until golden brown and hollow-sounding when tapped.
  7. 7Brush warm stollen with melted butter and generously coat with powdered sugar while still warm.
