Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp instant yeast
  • 1 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 1/4 cups warm water
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
  • 3 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1/2 cup molasses

Directions

  1. 1Mix flour, yeast, sugar, and salt, then add warm water and melted butter to form a soft dough.
  2. 2Knead for 7 minutes, cover, and let the dough rise for 60 minutes.
  3. 3Punch down the dough and divide it into twelve small rounds.
  4. 4Flatten each round to about 1/2 inch thick.
  5. 5Pan-fry the toutons in vegetable oil for 3–4 minutes per side until golden and cooked through.
  6. 6Serve hot with molasses spooned over the top.

💡 Keep the rounds fairly thin; thick toutons brown outside before the yeasted centre has time to cook through.
